Ph.D. Seoul National University (Mechanical Engineering )

Dr. Pilnam Kim earned her Ph.D. degree in 2009 from Seoul National University in Mechanical Engineering. After spending two years as a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University (2009-2011), she worked as a Senior Research Scientist at Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST). In July of 2012, Dr. Kim joined KAIST as faculty. Dr. Kim has been recognized numerous times for her research. She received the Presidential fellowship for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor given by the South Korean Government in the field of science, in 2012 for her post-doctoral research. In addition, Dr. Kim was appointed as an EWon Assistant Professor of KAIST in 2013. She has authored 71 research publications in various journals, including Nature Materials, Nature Photonics, PNAS, Advanced Materials, and Nano Letters. Accumulating over 3350 citations, Dr. Kim has an h-index of 28 (as of March, 2020, Google Scholar). Currently, she actively participates as a member of the Korean Society for Biomaterials, the Society of Micro and Nano Systems, serves on the Scientific Program Committee for the Korean BioChip Society, and holds the position of associate editor of the BioChip Journal. She has helped organize international conferences such as MicroTAS 2015, Biofabrication 2014, BAMN 2013, and ISNIT 2013, as well as various seminars at her home institution at KAIST. Kim’s research focuses on biomimetic approaches to engineering biological systems, biological microenvironments and their roles in disease progression, and intrinsic mechanisms behind biological processes for treatment of human disease.
